Getting Your Money’s Worth at The Salon

When you visit the salon or spa, you pay good money for services! Get the most out of your service by following these five tips.

1. Remove your own nail polish (also known as nail lacquer). This sounds silly, but remember that your appointment must be finished in time for the next client. If there are 45 or 60 minutes for your Nail Technician to complete your service, removing nail polish takes up several minutes of your appointment time that could be spent, say, on a massage! Now it doesn’t sound so silly, right?

2. Tell your Nail Technician what you like best about a pedicure or manicure. If you absolutely LOVE getting that massage or you really need your callouses worked on, be sure to request that your Nail Tech concentrate her time and efforts on that portion of the service. Remember to also tell her what she can shorten or skip in order to do so. For instance, you might let her know that you prefer a longer massage since you removed your own nail polish. Now you’re getting somewhere!

3. Make sure you’re allowed to soak your feet for five minutes before your Nail Tech begins working on your feet. When a Nail Tech rushes this step, your cuticles will not be optimum for him or her to push and nip. Five minutes of soak time allows your cuticle tissue to soften and enlarge for your Nail Tech to work with.

4. Bring your own flip flops. This way you can wear your own flip flops out of the salon or spa, ensuring that you will not bump or chip your brand new polish job. Switching shoes after service increases the likelyhood of ruining a beautiful polish job, and the pace of a salon makes it difficult for someone to come back to you and fix it. This also helps get you back to work on time if you’re on your lunch break!

5. Tip your Nail Tech. Nail Techs work as much for tips as for the percentage of the service they’re performing. When a Nail Tech knows you leave a respectful tip, they will remember you and be sure to go above and beyond to make your services excellent, often remembering your favorite magazines, bringing you water or tea, and generally catering to your needs. Nail Techs do back-breaking work all day and deserve to be tipped generously when they give good service.

Using these simple tips will enhance your pleasure and satisfaction when you get a manicure or pedicure at a salon or spa. Be sure to think about your last experience and communicate your wants and needs with your Nail Tech. Happy relaxing!
